Did you have a Bard Powerport device implanted for repeat IV access for medications, chemotherapy, fluids, nutrition, or other blood products?
The Bard Powerport was supposed to be a breakthrough device for patients who need repeat IV access. The polyurethane in the port is mixed with barium sulphate, which would allow the port to show up on an x-ray. Unfortunately, the device was defectively designed. The barium sulfate breaks down the port, leaving fractures, divets, deteriorations, or cracks.
Once the port fractures or moves, it leads to serious complications such as punctures, embolism, blood clots, and infections. Often times surgical intervention is required, and in the worse case scenario, a patient could die. These injuries and deaths could have been prevented by using simple technology that has been available for decades.
